Sharpen your mind, sharpen your day

Dr. John Ratey recently provided a zoom training for our mentors and he shared research that indicates that exercise engages more of your brain than any other activity by far. Exercise improves your memory, concentration, and problem solving. There is nothing better for your brain than movement, especially outside.

I also recently heard a wonderful parable about a woodcutter who was having trouble keeping up with one of his competitors. He simply asked the other woodcutter what he was doing differently. He was told that every hour he takes a break to sharpen his axe.

Spend some time today getting exercise, taking a break from the grind of work/life, spending some quiet time to focus your thoughts. You will find this to be an excellent investment. You will be more productive and happier. Research also shows that taking shorter/more frequent breaks during the day is the most effective way to curb cravings and reduce stress. A five minute walk will do wonders.

So… Plan some "sharpening" breaks in your day.
